I got an interesting email this morning from Apple saying that my account was suspended because there was information missing from my account. Also a link was provided to me to for me to “Confirm My Account”. I did not click on the link but I’m sure if I clicked on it I would be taken to a page that looked just like Apple’s login page and once I put my username and password in the fields the people who sent me this fake email would have my credentials.
People often ask me why “hackers” (not the word I would use to describe them) do stuff like send emails like this out. That is easy to answer, because people fall for it.
Please be careful. I will tell you what process I followed to dismiss this as a scam.
First here is an image of the email:
First, I look at who sent the email. If Apple sent this the email address would be from email@example.com not firstname.lastname@example.org
Second, the email address they used was not the email address for my Apple ID.
Third, I opened my email via web browser and I right-clicked the “Confirm My Account” link and clicked on Copy URL, when I paste it I get “http://apple-help-secure.gq/signin/login.php?dispatch=IHb2DM30RK02cYf6tKgNPa4sC&cmd=b34Ap7fVCOHUmvqVCLqZ”. Definitely not a link that Apple would send me.
I hope this post was insightful and useful. Be safe!
